Beyond the Couch: An Analyst at Work in South America Negotiating peace with the National Liberation Army

From the International Psychoanalytical Association:

We are privileged to have Professor Fergusson join us for this stimulating presentation in our current atmosphere of unpredictable violence that has shaken us worldwide. Professor Fergusson is a member of the Colombian Delegation for peace talks with the rebel groups “National Liberation Army of Colombia”. His approach could help us understand how to address social reality and current traumatic events and contemplate the possibility of negotiations, of dialogue, and hence, peace. Professor Fergusson will discuss some of the strategies and techniques of conflict management from a psychoanalytic approach. Professor Fergusson stated he is not willing to renounce his own identity of psychoanalyst while “doing what I am doing”. He does not accept the “somewhat pejorative category of so-called “applied psychoanalysis” and will try to show that what he does is psychoanalysis and not applied psychoanalysis. He will explain how we can still be full practicing psychoanalysts “far beyond the couch”.
